Abby and Margit are going to be in residency next week at Pieter. We are very excited to have the opportunity to work in a focused way on our upcoming piece, Foxing the Inframince, and we will do a showing of our work-in-progress on Saturday night. During the time, we are offering 2 workshops: one is a physically-based class as part of the Dance for Dancers series on Thursday, and the other is a very special performance workshop based on our Art Workouts teaching, good for all artistic media and transdisciplinary live artists. It would be so great if you could come. In addition, Margit will be offering a few private sessions in Physical Intelligence – contact her for a session directly. See Details below!

Dance Class for Dancers at Pieter 12noon – 3pm

Spirals; we have done them a million times, but we are not done with them yet…
This week’s Dance Class for Dancers will work on the power of spirals: as a source of structural support and energetic flow, and as physical principles that make a moving base for radical dance practice and construction. Inner spirals, girly spirals, bone spirals, nature’s flow. Margit will work with our energetic, sensorial, and physical bodies through Steve Paxton’s Material for the Spine and Qigong/Chinese Energetics. From this experiential research consciousness, Abby will bring us into the big dance.

You look through a hole.
There is a crafted body collapsed in the brambles. The fake water is flowing. A lantern.

We are living inside her body.

Built in partial response to Marcel Duchamp’s final and ingeniously schemed work Given, we are reworking the damn chamber with secret operations and yonic power. Our source material: decomposition, reclamation, self-doubting narcissism, and beastly hunger. Our construction: come in and witness while we make it.

Sunday, March 13, 11 – 3. Bring lunch and we can eat together in between and continue the discussion
Pieter PASD –  $35 – $65 sliding scale

In this three-hour-plus workshop, we will work from the assumption that where you are is where you are, and that wherever that  “place” is, is fertile ground for exploration.  Abandoning the pursuit of transformation in favor of mining the richness of each mediocre moment, we encourage ourselves to stay in the present and work from there. This lets us dig into what is instead of seeking something outside the lived experience. Our current state is compostable and usable material.  Resistance and laziness are welcomed, nurtured, and listened to. We might: ask questions, watch one another dance, use our voices in strange and potent ways, interview in dance, wrestle in slow motion, and access our mobile tongue. All these tools exist to invite a present, powerful, and attuned body-mind to your radical dance, performance, and live arts practice of any medium.

March 10 – 13 @ Pieter Performance Space

Margit will be offering private sessions in Physical Intelligence.  Would you like to be more effective in your art, life, and physicality? Margit’s integrative movement practice offers tailor-made sessions to promote your vitality, grace, and power. This powerful work is for individuals who want to become more in touch with their bodies, for dancers who want new information about their movement habits, and for artists who are developing a project and could use some embodied dramaturgical insight. Margit has worked with people from a vast range of ages, health and wellness capabilities, professionals and amateurs. She has been a dramaturg with creative art-makers such as Miguel Gutierrez and C. Ryder Cooley. Sessions come highly recommended!

Contact Margit directly to set up a private session. (510) 761- 6097.

Art Workouts is an ongoing dialogue/experiment between Margit Galanter, Abby Crain, and whatever and whoever crosses our path. We engage with the world around us for artistic revelation and inspiration, culling what seems relevant, problematic, brilliant.   We get together and make art. We are primarily movers so the work deals a lot with the body, performance, and that mysterious assemblage, presence. We periodically arrange workshops so that we can meet and explore with groups of people. This is when the work starts to hum.

Margit Galanter is a movement investigator and dance poet living in Oakland. Her fascination with the construction and value of movement has drawn her to the many forms live action can take. Her unique practice, Physical Intelligence, helps people experience the innate clarity and vitality one can uncover through the potency of movement, through her expertise as a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitionercm, acupressurist, qigong practitioner, and movement artist. – Arts Site:  <> ; Practice: <>
